Thermal and airflow variability

In our previous blog of visual connection with nature, we saw how it is important to have a window with a view of nature in order to stay connected. This pattern is related to visual connection with nature in a way that it not only provides us with daylight and a view but also breeze. This concept is very simple to understand as it has been going on for ages and it points out the importance of windows in a space. The circulation of air is most important for human comfort.

It is already known to people that why is ventilation required in a space. It keeps the room fresh. The space with more windows with natural air and daylight coming in, will always be better than space with a small window.

This pattern evolves from looking at the effects of natural ventilation. This pattern is meant to mimic the actual nature in terms of temperature changes with different seasons and weathers in the built Environment. There are many changes in temperature, in the direction of sunrays and thus forming shadows and dull areas throughout the day. These changes subconsciously engages our mind and comforts us as we are connected to a natural process of nature on a daily basis. Research shows that people like moderate levels of changes in environment including light, sound, and temperature. Also an environment completely free from sensory stimulation and variability can lead to boredom and disinterest. The elements of soft fascination such as light breezes or other natural movements can improve concentration. This is applicable in every space such as homes, offices, classrooms, hospitals and so on. A variety of thermal conditions can lead to better student performance and also changes in ventilation velocity can have a positive impact on comfort.

But how do we incorporate all this in a built Environment? The most natural and basic thing we can do is maximizing window glazing and treatment with mechanical controls which can be shut according to personal needs and preferences. Since thermal comfort is purely subjective, and strongly varies between people, it is important to give the control to individuals. Indoor outdoor seating with differing levels of heat gain. For example- sitting outdoors and catching a cool breeze on a sunny day or sitting indoors under the sunrays on a cold morning. Cross ventilation is also important in a space to keep it alive and fresh. Mechanically, it can be incorporated with the help of HVAC delivery systems.

A space with good thermal and airflow variability feels fresh, refreshing, active and comfortable.
