STEPPING INTO NATURE

Since many centuries, representations of animals and plants have been used for decorative and symbolic ornamentation. Before representation, cultures around the world have long brought nature into homes and public spaces. The consistency of natural themes in historic structures and places suggests that biophilic design is not a new phenomenon. Due to urbanization, we have lost the touch of nature.

Biophilic design can reduce stress, enhance creativity and clarity of thought, improve our well-being and accelerate healing. To get in a perfect tune with nature, there are various aspects of nature that most impact our satisfaction with the built environment. Biophilic design is essential for providing people opportunities to live and work in healthy places and spaces with less stress and greater overall health and well-being. Biophilia is to bring out human being’s natural connection with nature.

Why do people love adventures like trekking, hiking, camping in the woods, under water diving, bungee jumping and so on? It is because while doing these adventures, many different types of feelings rush into one’s body. The fear of falling, the fear of getting caught by some wild animal in the woods, the safety they feel when they are in a cave or under a large tree, the feeling of finally reaching the top of the mountain and seeing a breathtaking view of nature, the excitement of solving the mystery of never ending roads in a forest, fear of heights, the joy of the view, the risk of getting lost. The feeling of seeing a sunset or hearing the sounds of waves or leaves rustling, the smell of unlimited species and so on.

The enjoyment of scenery employs the mind without fatigue and yet exercises it, tranquilizes it and yet enlivens it; and thus, through the influence of the mind over the body, gives the effect of refreshing rest and reinvigoration to the whole system.

Now just imagine, if all these feelings you can experience on a daily basis, how refreshing would that be? The mindset of going to work will change as soon as such steps will be taken to reconnect humans with nature. We as designers are in a constant effort to provide people with something more than usual, not just things but experiences. Various architects and designers have stepped into nature and made such masterpieces and the people living into it are experiencing the benefits of the same.      The healthcare facilities in Singapore have designed the building totally biophilic and it is seen that the patients residing there not only recover faster but also more positive about everything. Adopting nature techniques of doing things and replicating them for our benefits can also be fruitful. This is another aspect of nature that is Biomimicry.

Try to incorporate all these feelings in your built environment. While designing a space, take account of human nature and emotions and how a person reacts to his surroundings. Look at the things around you and what excites you and start noticing stuff.

In the next blog we will get into more detail about how we can incorporate these feelings of nature into design.
