OUR SHARE

The world today is handcuffed by a virus that has a diameter of 120 NM and the only thing we can do is sit at our own houses and wait for it to ring our doorbells.

The current situation in every country is very crucial. Even the countries with the best health care have become slaves to this novel virus. The only solution is to take appropriate measures and precautions as an individual and also as a member of the society. The countries which are still at a better situation can take lessons from the experienced countries and be prepared for what’s coming. The problem is that we are still not taking it seriously and thinking it is not going to reach us, that’s where we are wrong. Till December, it was only in China but in 3 months, it became a global pandemic.

Talking about precautionary measures, on an individual level we can practice social distancing by staying at our respective homes, but as a part of this society we can help the world by social networking by spreading awareness and coming up with solutions to deal with the current situation also by staying at our homes. The Government, the Doctors, the Nurses, the Police, the Media, everyone is doing their respective jobs and sharing the load of this pandemic so we as DESIGNERS thought what can we do to save the human kind as part of our share?

We as designers and also a part of this society have made a very small effort to help the human kind in any way we can. We have come up with some solutions to deal with Novel Corona Virus. Keeping in mind the population of every country and the number of hospitals, we need to create more temporary structures in any available space to increase the amount of patients treated at a time.

The places which are vacant due to lockdown can be used and converted into a hospital to treat the infected. That doesn’t mean we put beds in every corner without any additional safety, to control the spread of this we also need to look at the safety of the doctors and nurses and also the separation of the critical from the suspected or confirmed patients with minimum symptoms for their faster recovery. Keeping in mind the number of equipments required for treatment of critical patients, we cannot afford every individual getting critical who require those equipments. So a proper division has to be done to avoid such a situation. That is where the role of the designer comes into picture.

Coming to our suggestion:

  • The indoor spaces such as schools, banquet halls, convention centres, exhibition centres, and many more can be used as a hospital with minimum set up which is cost efficient and with materials which are easily available also doesn’t damage the existing structure.
  • The outdoor spaces such as open fields, grounds, stadiums, race courses and many more can be used as a hospital with the required amount of set up which caters maximum patients keeping in mind the cost and also to minimize the spread of the virus.
  • We have come up with two set ups, one indoor and one outdoor that can be merged, altered within any space.
  • A hypothetical plan of a school has been taken to set up a hospital and to understand the working of a virus treating hospital. This set up can be taken to any other indoor space and it will work the same with minimum alteration.
  • A complete structure of a temporary hospital has also been planned to work in an open field.
  • The basic idea is to understand the necessity of various other things apart from beds to help control the spread of the virus. This includes the safety of doctors, nurses, and all other people working in a hospital.

The Indoor space

The indoor space which we have assumed is a school with two floors with various classrooms, washrooms, a wide corridor with basic lights and ventilation and no air conditioning system.
  • The ground floor is dedicated to the critical patients and the first floor is dedicated to the general patients who may be suspected or confirmed.
  • The classrooms which are on the first floor has been converted into a general ward for treatment of the infected with mild symptoms. A provision is made for 3 patients with proper isolation from the corridor. The isolation is necessary also in a case of general patients. The air of the general ward should not go outside the room untreated. Though COVID-19 is not an airborne disease but the research shows that the tiny particles float in the air after the infected person coughs or sneezes for about 3 to 4 hours and if someone inhales those particles, he can be infected. So for such a provision, an anteroom is provided in the entry to airlock the isolation ward. The isolation room is under negative pressure and so the air doesn’t go out of the isolation room through the door.
  • Some of the classrooms on the 1st floor have also been converted into medical and supplies room where the extra supplies and medications in large quantity is kept. A whole classroom is converted into a nurse station where the nurses can maintain patient’s medical history in the form of files and also storage given to them to store their personal items and also a place to rest.
  • The negative pressure in the room simply means The Isolation room pressure is lower than the adjoining rooms or corridor.
  • The same is done for the critical rooms on the ground floor.
  • The critical room set up is for one patient per room and 2 patients per room.
  • Critical rooms also have an anteroom to maintain negative pressure and also to keep the equipments like the gloves, masks, body suit and so on. Apart from the anteroom, there is a nurse resting area too for the health of the nurses and doctors. Keeping them in good health is our priority.
  • In the absence of air conditioning, the negative pressure is achieved by using wall fans and exhaust fan with a virus burnout unit. The partitions are important to contain the infection in that particular space.
  • All corridors and rooms have portable wash basins and sanitizers in a properly planned manner according to their use.

The Outdoor Space

The outdoor space which we have assumed is an open field with almost no facilities. The set up is planned keeping in mind all the requirements of a virus treating hospital.

  • There are 2 types of module- a straight module dealing with general patients with mild and severe symptoms and an “I” shaped module dealing with critical patients.
  • Both these modules have met with the requirements with intellectual planning of how the facilities can be incorporated into an open filed.
  • The straight module with general patients are also kept in isolation under negative pressure to contain the virus in that particular room and keeping the air of the other areas neutral and fresh. The airlock is created with the help of the anteroom.
  • The straight module also has nursing stations and place for storage to keep all the equipments and medications.
  • The “I” shaped module dealing with critical patients, each having an anteroom to help maintain a negative pressure and to keep the personal protective equipments.
  • The “I” shaped module also has a place to rest for the doctors and the nurses.
  • There are spaces dedicated to the nursing stations to maintain files of each patients and sample storage.
  • As this set up is in an open field, the security becomes an important aspect. So all the main entry doors have access through RFID cards.
